How to Plant Tomato and Cucumber Seedlings – Innovative Weed Control

Recycled Tomato Cages Recycled Tomato Cages

Today at Farmhouse Magic Blog, we are going to talk about planting tomato and cucumber seedlings.

The tomato cages are recycled from last year and support the plants when they are heavy with tomatoes.

We are trying a new method of weed control by using a piece of newspaper under the top soil.

I’ve used this method of weed control with a tree base but never with a vegetable garden.

These tomato plants are pretty small yet so they will need careful watering and weed control.

The recycled tomato cages have already been placed over the seedlings.

It is easier to add the cages when the tomato plants are still small.

Here we are adding bags of top soil to our garden.

The soil in the garden is pretty much all red clay.

The bagged top soil promotes better plant growth.

These cucumber seedlings are tiny.  I separated the seedlings.  There were three seedlings per planter.  Two were stuck together and I didn’t want to damage the small roots so they were planted together.

These seedlings are going to need some tender loving care for a bit until they get rooted in their new environment.

That’s what growing in my little COVID-19 “Victory” garden.  Now what’s growing in your garden?
