How to Refinish Paper Mache Pumpkins

I thought I would refinish my old paper Mache pumpkins.  I have had them for a number of years and they were looking worn and dated.

I wanted a new and fresh centerpiece for my dinning room table.

Also, muted shades of white and tan would work better for my table.

This is a photograph of what the paper Mache pumpkins looked like before starting the project.

They were various shades of orange and orange gold.

I, also, did not like the look of the unattractive large stems.  I wanted more natural looking stems.

How to Update a Pumpkin Centerpiece

To make the stems look smaller, I took a sharp knife and cut out a slice from each stem.

I then tightly pulled the stems together making them smaller.

To hold things together, I wrapped the now smaller stems, with a couple strips of brown paper bag liberally dotted with white household glue.

The stems were allowed to thoroughly dry before painting.

The next step was to paint the pumpkins.  I used a buttermilk white colored acrylic paint.

For the stems, I used a mixture of dark chocolate and light avocado acrylic paints.

I wanted to add some ivory or cream colored berry sprigs to my centerpiece.  However, I had difficulty finding any floral sprigs I liked, so I ended up using what I had on hand.

To make things match, I painted the edges of the pine cones with the same buttermilk colored acrylic paint.

I was very pleased with how my newly redone pumpkins turned out.

The pumpkins are displayed in a long rectangle white dish with the painted flower picks.

I also added an ecru colored table runner.  Lastly, I scattered fall silk leaves in a random pattern over the table and dish.

Always try new ways to look at old craft projects and make them work for you.

I love my fresh new white pumpkin centerpiece for fall.
