Visiting Vienna

Visiting Vienna, VA is the title to today’s blog. However, we were in the mood for some authentic Polish kielbasa, so we took a trip to the Polish food store in Vienna.

Polish Kielbasa Sandwich

I remember my in-laws visiting the local butcher in their town to pick up some holiday Polish kielbasa around Christmas and Easter time.

Today the store had wedding Polish kielbasa for sale in their deli section which we purchased. So how was that wedding polish kielbasa?

The photograph on the left shows a double Polish kielbasa sandwich.

It was simple food yet the kielbasa was nicely spiced and delicious.

Overseas Parcels

I, also, noticed this sign on the door for parcel service to Poland and Eastern Europe.

In checking the web site for this company It offers shipping of commercial and personal good with high reliability and excellent service.

If you plan to move to Poland, they will move all your items including cars and motorcycles.

Hawk & Griffin British Pub

In the adjacent parking lot in Vienna, there is a restaurant is called Hawk & Griffin which is advertised as being a British pub serving British inspired meals. One can also stop in for British beers, music or even a game of darts.

When I got home, I checked out their online menu. Hawk & Griffin serves such traditional comfort food such as cottage pie, beef pasties, pickled cucumber salad with dill vinaigrette dressing, house made fish bites, and bangers and mash, i.e., (sausage and mashed potatoes).

Red British Phone Booths in Visiting Vienna Blog

What definitely caught my eye was their British red public telephone booth located near the front outdoor dining area. The red telephone booth is definitely a cultural icon from “over the pond”. There is nothing in the booth but it is fun to get up close and peek inside.

I checked out some of the history of the red telephone booths. My internet research, indicates that Sir Giles Gilbert Scott designed the booths.

The red booths can still be seen in the United Kingdom, Malta, Gibraltar and Bermuda. They were painted red so that they could be easily seen on a busy street.

The crown above the telephone sign represents the British government.

In going with the times, some “currant red” booths have been transformed into mail boxes and stamp vending machines. In 2011, there was a competition by Girls Guide to come up with a new use for the booths. Their winning idea was to install a defibrillator in one red booth.

Ending Notes on Visiting Vienna Blog

It is always fun to blog about something different and I think Hawk & Griffin will get me coming back to try one of their delicious sounding meals.

I also enjoyed my trip to the Polish Store for polish inspired foods.

Did I just see a double-decker bus pass by? No just kidding.

I sent my friend from Scotland a photograph of Hawk & Griffin’s red British phone booth and she said it was “the real deal”.
