Summer Garden To Do List

It has been awhile since I blogged about my garden, so I thought I would give my Readers an update on all the green things in my yard.

It has been a hot summer and I have been busy with daily watering and weeding. The below center photograph shows my garden taken from the back view.

Patio Garden:

Last year I replanted lots of hostas in the garden. This year they were spectacular in appearance when their purple and white blooms appeared on tall stalks.

I also planted colorful purple flowers and white geraniums in my large crocks.

I wasn’t sure about the white geraniums as I usually buy red but I liked the white flowers against the white patio doors.

I removed two of the large sedum plants and replanted them upfront where they will have more room to grow. The sedum’s flowers right now are a blush color and attract a lot of bees and butterflies.

One of the other garden chores is to keep the plants fertilized with an all-purpose fertilizer. We recently added some tomato fertilizer to the soil around the tomatoes.

I’ve also had trouble with slugs so I put out some slug poison or else I would have no flowers in my pots.

The below photograph shows the view of my patio from my steps.

I had lots of weeds growing in-between the patio bricks. This year I have used an organic oil spray to kills the weeds. It partially kills the weeds but if you don’t give it a second spraying the weeds revive themselves.

Vegetable & Fruit Garden:

The tomatoes plants we selected didn’t do well this year. Not sure if the weather is to blame since it has been so hot and humid.

I usually have tons of tomatoes but this was a lean year for tomatoes. As I yet, I haven’t frozen any extra tomatoes.

We planted some cucumber seedlings earlier this summer and they are growing fine, see photograph below.

In fact the cucumber plants want to grow on a fence.

Below is my Summer Garden To Do Check List

  1. Keep plants watered.
  2. Fertilize plants, shrubs and trees.
  3. If troubled with slugs, put out slug poison.
  4. Remove weeds growing between bricks in patio and along the edges.
  5. Deadhead flowers and cuff off dead or yellowing leaves
  6. Pick up debris in garden. We had a lot of small branches which fell because of the 17-year cicadas infestation.
  7. Refresh mulch as needed.

Don’t forget to start planning your fall garden!
