National Sunglasses Day – Tips for Selecting Sunglasses

Yesterday, June 27th, was National Sunglasses Day as per the Vision Counsel. I thought I would touch on this important health topic even though the day had passed.

I absolutely love wearing my sunglasses. Not only are they a fashion statement, but they will also help protect the health of your eyes. I was raised in a very sunny climate and always had a pair of sunglasses on as a teenager into adulthood.

The Vision Counsel stresses the importance of wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays or (UV).

Blocking ultraviolet rays is important for everyone, in particular, children’s eyes should be protected. UV exposure is cumulative.

According to the Vision Counsel, your eyes can even become sunburned. This is called photokertitis. Too much sun exposure can also lead to acceleration of cataracts, age related macular disease, and even eyelid skin cancer.

The photograph below shows a couple pairs of sunglasses. One style is slightly wrap around for better UV protection.

Make sure your sunglasses feel comfortable so you will wear them.

Tips for Selecting Sunglasses

Heart Shaped Face – Try slightly rounded frames like aviators or rimless.

Round Shaped Face – Choose rectangles, square, sport or retro styles.

Oblong Shaped Face – Try wrap around sunglasses.

Square Shaped Face – Select round, oval, or curved frames to soften the face shape.

All the information on this page was taken from the Vision Counsel’s web site. For for more information on this topic, please contact them.

Enjoy the sunny day but don’t forget to wear your sunglasses!
