Avoid Over Spending at Christmas

This inexpensive reindeer candy holder was probably purchased in a dollar store but it remains a favorite item.  It was given to my son by my mother-in-law who passed away years ago.

Money doesn’t buy love.

Not everything has a price tag on it during the holiday season.

Holiday Financial Concerns – Spend or to Not Spend?

As Black Friday slowly approaches, I think back to past Black Fridays when a certain relative would get up at 4 a.m. to go out shopping.  I was totally shocked that anyone could want something so dearly that they would drive in the dark of early morning.

Let’s step back for a moment to think about our upcoming shopping trip, take a deep breath, and decide if we can afford to purchase that special discounted item?

Most likely we are going to have to charge it and then slowly pay it off over the year (or years?).  Did that purchase make you happy?

The point I am stressing here is that love doesn’t cost money.  The holidays shouldn’t be stressful with trying to get everyone what they want.  Try to give people what they need–love, attention, a break from the housework, etc.  Bake a batch of cookies, a cake or fudge to give out.  Buy an inexpensive plant or flower arrangement for yourself or others.  Give a special person a homemade dinner coupon.  Donate food or clothing to a homeless shelter.

At the farmhouse, we put up a 1930’s Depression era Christmas exhibit.  Back then, the children usually received only a stocking filled with a few nuts, perhaps a candy cane and an orange.  Things were simpler back then but the children were just as excited.

The point of my blog is to not get caught up in the spending frenzy.  Wisely make your purchases, keep to your budget, and think of buying the person what they truly need.  Don’t get caught up in the swirling horde of shoppers, elbowing others while pushing credit cards through the machines.
