Herndon, Past Home of “Summer Cottages”

For today’s blog we are going back to the turn of the 19th century when Herndon was the site of summer cottages.  Some people came from Washington, DC to enjoy Herndon’s small town appeal.

The above photograph shows J. J. Darlington’s Herndon summer retreat home.  He often invited his friends and guests to stay at his home in Herndon.

J. J. Darlington (1849-1920) was a prominent attorney in downtown Washington, DC.

The photograph on the left, shows a Herndon Historical Marker near the area.

As history goes, J. J. Darlington was out one day looking for a place away from Washington, DC where he could rest and have a little relaxation.

He came to Herndon and knew he found the perfect location.

He built a home on this site which could better be described as a summer resort or estate.

Darlington’s home was built by A. J. Downing.  It had 25 rooms, 5 bathrooms, and several sleeping porches.

The above photograph taken from the marker, shows men and women in jaunty summer hats lounging on the gingerbread cut out porch.

The children are sitting on the front steps.  One child had a doll baby carriage in front of her.

According to my internet research, Darlington’s home was torn down in the 1950’s and all that remains is this landscaped field and this marker.

I believe the two above photographs were also part of the land owned by J. J. Darlington, however, I’m not a totally sure on this point.

Herndon—another look at its past history.
