Looking for something a little bit different to do than our usual Saturday night routine, we decided to take in an improvisation show called Calamity: The Show. According to their playbill, their goal is to produce bold, imaginative theater.
The Show
It has been awhile since we saw an improv show which has no written script. The show was held at the ArtsCenter@ArtSpace Herndon in Herndon, VA. The theatre group was called The Dark Horse Theatre Company.
Small tables and chairs were set up for the audience.
The show was at ArtsHerndon in Herndon from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. on April 8th. Apparently, the shows are held twice a month but every show is different.
The group consisted of four featured players–Brian David Clarke, Hannah Coyne, Natasha Parnian and Raju Sharma.
I was a little surprised when we became of the center of the first skit. Yes, they talked about how we met at the Gingerbread Man with my sensible shoes.
The skits were anything from tigers at a museum gala, aliens, players talking gibberish, etc. There is even a skit when the players borrowed phones from the audience and used their text messages to tell a story. Then they did a cute skit where they tried to tell a secret that an optometrist, in a pool, had a shark attack. It is a crazy combination.
All the featured players in Calamity: The Show were both trained actors and comedians.
Ending Notes on Calamity: The Show
It was an enjoyable evening seeing their show and it kept us laughing.
I read the biographies on the actors on their playbill. Brian even worked in the circus as an elephant trainer but, interestingly enough, a second person in the audience also worked at a circus.
So, would definitely recommend seeing their performance. By the way, Natasha also offers classes in Homeschool Theatre if you want to learn more about improv.
A Special Thank you to the Dark Horse Theater Company for allowing me to take photographs at Calamity: The Show and post them on today’s blog.
