The other day I was out shopping when I noted a grouping of Pink Butterfly Bushes. In checking one of the plant’s tags, these particular plants are called Princess Pink Butterfly Bushes. Note – Lovely appropriate name.
As the name implies, butterfly bushes attract butterflies and other pollinators to the garden.
Butterfly Bush Information
The tag on this Princess Pink Butterfly Bush said they like full sun. They grow 60-inches in height, and the width is 72-78-inches. It blooms midsummer and into the fall months.
The plant prefers well-drained soil. They can be planted in a border, mixed garden beds, used in cut flower arrangements or to attract butterflies to your garden.
Pink butterfly bushes have been around for a while. However, my research shows, the pink cultivators began to appear in nurseries back in the 1980’s, including the Princess Pink line.
So now, you can have smaller butterfly bushes and your choice of color as long as it is either purple or pink.
Purple Butterfly Bush – My Garden
Originally, when I purchased my home, the yard had a very large purple butterfly bush growing out a hilly rock filled area.
To keep it in check, I continually pruned back the branches. Finally, it became too big and awkward to work with plus the shape was all off. Some of the branches were also dead. I hated to do so, but I ended up removing it.
OK, I really tried to work with this bush, but it was planted in an odd area not in a garden bed area. Also, it was difficult to mow grass around all the large sandstone rocks which the roots had grown around. Lastly, the overgrown plant attracted mice to the area.

In closing, now I see butterfly bushes come in a delicate soft pink color. Compact size butterfly bushes are also available.
I think the lesson in today’s blog is always check the size of plants you want to add to your garden before purchasing. Sometimes, things are too unruly and grow too large for a particular spot.
Hummm . . . Is it time to plant another butterfly bush in my yard? Yes, I might soon be known as the crazy plant lady! I’ll keep my readers posted.
