Nachman Building

Farmhouse Magic Blog is taking a trip down memory lane today when we blog about the Nachman Building. The Nachman building is a white and green building with an upstairs.

The site also also has a bike rack and few outdoor tables and chairs if you wish to have a cup of coffee after your bike ride.

The building’s history goes back to 1913 when Marcus and Celia Cohen purchased a piece of land with a building. It was located on Lynn Street in downtown Herndon. They then opened a store at the site.

In 1911, Julius Nachman came to America from Russia. In 1919, Julius bought an interest in the Cohen’s store.

The Cohens then sold their property and store rights in 1928 to Julius and his wife.

Nachman Building

The Nachmans lived on the second floor and they ran a clothing store out of the ground floor for many years.

In 1994, the store was closed. It had been in business and family run for 75 years.

On January 14, 2020, a proclamation recognized Nachman Day in Herndon to honor the 100th anniversary of the family in the town.

The National Registry of Historic Places describes the Nachman building as serving the public longer than any other commercial building in Herndon.

The upstairs portion still has a Nachman’s 1919, sign over the door.

Ending Notes on the Nachman Building

Today the location hosts a cycling and coffee house on the first floor. If I am downtown Herndon, I’ll occasionally stop in for a hot coffee.

If you visit the shop, you will see the original wood floors.
