Today we decided to take a short trip and spend the afternoon in Purcellville, VA. Purcellville is a small town with a lot of character and charm.
In Purcellville to cross one busy street, you pick up a yellow flag and wave it to signal to traffic that you want to cross. Sure enough, cars on both sides of the highway immediately stopped. Waving the flag makes crossing the road fun and it puts a smile on your face. You then place the yellow flag in the container on the other side of the road.
Today I’m blogging about a local shop in Purcellville with the name of It’s Bazaar on 21st Street which sells antiques, collectables, and gifts. It was, also, located on 21st Street.
1950’s Tin Doll House
The first item I would like to blog about in the store, is a 1950’s tin two-story doll house, (see below photograph). I noticed that some of the doll house’s windows and doors open. The exterior of the doll house is designed to look like a real house made with shingles and red bricks. There is some green ivy growing around the doors as well as a flower box.
When you turn the doll house around it consists of the various rooms in a house. The design elements are preprinted. For example, things like carpets, wallpaper, etc., are printed into the design.
Tin doll houses were quite the fad during the 1950’s. The problem with tin doll houses is that they rust and ding if not treated properly.
I remember having a pink tin doll house that my mother picked up second hand. It was pretty rusty and broken up but it was still fun to play with.
Vintage Soda Bottles
This shelf in their store contains a collection of mostly vintage soda bottles.
I see they even have a few bottles of Crass Soda which was bottled locally in Alexandria. I believe it tasted like a lemon-lime soda but I’m not totally sure on that one.
The photograph on the left shows a large variety of soda bottles.
Vintage Hat Collection
I loved this hat rack tree with a variety of hats. I don’t believe all the hats looked vintage to me but are a mixture of older and new.
The pink woman’s hat is decorated with a ring of pink silk roses.
This hat looks like a special occasion hat.
If a woman left the house during the 1950’s, she wore her hat along with clean white gloves.
Large Record Collection
The store had a large collection of record albums for sale.
Briefly looking through the records, I noticed a variety of music, singers and bands.
There is a whole section of the store devoted to the large record collection.
Blue Mini-Three Horse Children’s Carousel
The front sidewalk of It’s Bazaar had a cute blue mini-three horse carousel displayed, (see below center photograph).
I noticed on It’s Bazaar’s business card they offer, also, vending and consignment space to people with items to sell.
Did you ever ride on one of these children’s rides?
They were usually located in front of a grocery store or at a shopping center. I think you had to put a dime or quarter in a slot to make it move.
As a child, every time we shopped at this one particular grocery/candy store, we hopped on their rocking horse. It didn’t matter that we never put any money in it.
Please feel free to leave us a comment below. Thanks.
A Special Thank you to It’s Bazaar – 21 Street for allowing me to take photographs and blog about their store.
