This hand crafted clay bowl has been in my household for many years.
Handmade Pottery
I actually made the pot and lid on a pottery wheel in a ceramic class. When the project was finished, a wire cut the pot off the pottery wheel stand. The students all wore a smock to keep their clothing clean as the soupy clay splashed around a bit. Wet clay is, also, hard on the hands and very drying.
The exterior of the red clay bowl has a rough lined exterior although I don’t remember exactly how these lines were applied. I might have used a comb for this but I’m not sure.
The bowl and lid are painted in brown glaze but it came out of the kiln with some white spots. The interior was given a clear coating.
In looking back, I think the whole pot would have looked better in clear glaze.
The walls of the pot are approximately one-half inch thick.
Using a Pottery Wheel to Make a Hand Crafted Clay Bowl
Working with clay on a pottery wheel was nothing like the famous scene in that romantic movie from years ago when that good looking guy surprises the girl. He then helps her to redo her vase on the pottery wheel.
My pottery instructor was a white haired older gentleman with a Southern accent. It definitely takes skill and practice to mold the clay into an object, any object.
Also, our pottery wheel was manual, you had to kick it with your foot to get it started.
This lid fits the pot nicely and was also done with the matching circular lines.
The pot has a few chips here and there, but still looks great filled with white poinsettias.
New Year’s Resolutions and the Hand Craft Clay Bowl
I’ve been thinking about New Year’s resolutions today. I could always sign up for another pottery class and expand on my present skills.
However, I don’t think throwing pots on the pottery wheel is in the stars for me. For the new year, I would like to try something I haven’t done before.
For all my Readers, don’t be afraid to try something new and different. May all your New Year’s resolutions come true.
