Garden Chores – “Making Do” With What You Have During COVID-19

Blueberry Bush Blueberry Bush

This week while I was out in my yard, I noted that my blueberry bushes have quite a few flowers on them.

This summer, I really don’t want the animals to eat all the blueberries.  We are going to cover them up in “blueberry cages”.

Unfortunately, we are unable to go to the store to get additional wood and caging wire to button them up so we had to get creative and use what we had on hand.

Our backyard is totally fenced in on about a third of an acre, so we are not near to anyone while we are outside.  We are definitely keeping  social distancing margins.

The old garden fence was carefully taken apart and made into the top of the blueberry cages.

It’s great to find something that is sitting in your yard that you can re-purpose and make it into something you need.

The blueberry cage is the large cage nearest to the white tool shed.

Hopefully, it will work so that we can get a few more blueberries this year.

Bonus Feature – Re-purposing Plastic Sign for Gutter Water Overflow

About three years ago I had a wood ant termite infestation near this area of my home which caused about $1,600. in damages.

This gutter downspout sometimes overflows on to my house if it is really storming.

I decided to place this plastic sign right next to the area so that the drainage water will not enter the house.

This is also a “make do” attempt until I can get to the hardware store and find something that looks a little better.

Tulip Flower Update

Here is a photograph of two yellow tulips in my yard.

Unfortunately, over the years the squirrels and other animals have eaten most of the tulip bulbs.

I pretty much now only plant daffodils which the squirrels leave alone.
