Eastern Garter Snake

Easter Garter Snake Eastern Garter Snake

I was out today in the garden pulling out weeds when I came across this snake.

Again, after checking photographs on the herpetology society, I believe I have an Eastern Garter Snake in my yard.

The Eastern Garter Snake grows 18 to 26 inches long and is common to the south east and most of North America.

If you look closely in the above photograph you can see the snake in the shade near the house.

The snake is pretty well camouflaged with the leaves and ground around him.

This was a feisty little snake and immediately tried to bite me.  Fortunately, he is not venomous and I didn’t get close enough for him to strike.

I think I need to clean up my yard a bit.

Did you Know that the

Official State Reptile of Massachusetts is the Garter Snake?
