History of the Airport

Dulles International Airport opened back in 1962. At that time, the Reston/Herndon area was rural with dairy farmers and the new airport was not very busy.

However, over the years, the area’s employment, housing, businesses grew. So the airport put in more flights and it became more well known.

In 1980, the airport was remodeled so passengers could walk between connecting flights.

As of this writing, construction of the Metro Train Silver Line continues and will bring the Metro train to the airport. From my online research, the Metro Silver Line to Dulles should be done around the summer of 2022.

Flying Out of Dulles Today

From its humble beginnings as a rural airport, Dulles now has more international passenger traffic than any airport in the mid-Atlantic area except for New York.

The airport’s most popular U.S. destination is Denver, Colorado with 244,001 travelers in 2020/21.

Today the traffic was good on the road near the airport.

Usually things are busy, busy around here.

It was a quick and easy trip, surprisingly, we pulled up to the drop off point as there were several open spots. During busy times, there is a wait to let off passengers.

This airport is a great place to fly out of, so pack your bags and good bye.

Have a safe trip!
