Below are some of the items, I purchased this week on a couple of my junk store shopping trips.
Gerity Products Reproduced Hanoverian Rattail Spoon
Sometimes it is the cheapest secondhand item that proves to be the most interesting. The reproduced Hanoverian silver-plated spoon, below right, was made by Gerity Products, Inc. of Toledo.
The markings on the back handle of the spoon, read the letter “G” with a clover leaf symbol and the numbers 4 and 8. This is the trademark of Gerity Products, Inc. The original Hanoverian spoon pattern was made back in 1710 to 1730 in England.
The photograph of the spoon on the right, was appropriately named a “rattail” spoon.
If you look closely at the back of the spoon, you will see the vertical line on the spoon bowl which looks like a rat’s tail.
The “rattail” design on the back was used to strengthen the bowl and the handle.
Gerity Products opened their doors in 1898. However, I believe currently they are no longer in business.
Update – Nov. 8, 2021: Presently this spoon is struck in the dirt of a large planter on my patio as I am trying the age the spoon for a museum display.
Tin Flour Sifter
Another kitchen tool I purchased was a like-new Good Cook Flour Sifter with a nice wooden knob handle.
I paid $2 for this sifter but see on line the price usually runs closer to $10. I’ve been making some cakes and breads which require sifting of the flour, so I’ll see how this sifter works.
This tin flour sifter will be a nice addition to my kitchen utensils.
Field Book on North America Birds
Now this next item was free at the ReStore shop. They were having a special deal if you purchased something, you were allowed to pick out a free book. I’m not sure how long this promotion will run.
I selected this field book on wild birds.
This book will be a special treat to anyone living in North America who loves birds and wants to identify them.
.
This free field guide to wild birds will be given to a bird lover.
The books is beautifully illustrated and best of all it was free.
New Faberware Kitchen Knife
The next item was just too good to pass up even thought I have several knives in my kitchen drawer. It was priced at only .50 cents and was still in the original wrapper.
The kitchen knife is 8-inches long and never needs sharpening made by Farberware. It also comes with a limited lifetime warranty.
Faberware started in New York City back in 1900 by a tinsmith by the name of S. W. Farber. Faberware is known for their kitchen innovation and changing with the times. It was the first company to introduce a coffee percolator.
Faberware has invented many kitchen gadgets and has over 120 years of producing a quality and long lasting product.
Star Patterned Placemats
My next purchase of the week was four placemats with a star pattern. They were priced at $4. They are neutral in color so it will go with my other things.
I photographed most of today’s blog items on these used/new star placemats. They, also, wash up nicely.
Vintage Tin Nutmeg/Spice Grater
My last purchase of the week is the below photograph of the vintage tin nutmeg or spice grater. It is approximately 5-inches long and has a hole in the top to hang it up.
This small grater will grate not only nutmeg but, also, ginger, citrus peel, chocolate or hard cheese. The top of the the grater is missing. It was only 50 cents so I’m not worried about that. It had a price tag showing $18 on the back but I would think that price probably included some nutmeg spice.
This nutmeg spice grater is a little rusty and discolored.
When fall rolls around, I’m sure I’ll be able to use it to grate fresh nutmeg on any pumpkin items I make.
So ends another week of bargain shopping. I spent well under $10 for all of the above purchases.
If you would like to leave a comment on any of the items I purchased this week, please leave me a note below. What is your favorite accent color for your kitchen pans?
