Looking at these cute dog toys brought back some memories.
On display, let’s see we have stuffed toys which look very much like beer cans and Fursace purses with cord handles. If you want something else, there is a leather pull toy with lots of ropes attached to it. There is even a black or tan large stuffed toy dog if you like dogs but don’t have one.
Dog Loving Family & Cute Dog Toys
I was thinking back to growing up and having a series of fun-loving, feisty male dogs. My mother never wanted to deal with puppies, so we always kept male dogs. My family also liked the idea of having a watch dog about since we were in an isolated location, and our dogs would bark if someone was on the property or near the house.
Occasionally, we would “test” the dogs by sneaking out the back door, putting on an old coat, and making odd noises. Of course, at some point the dogs would see or hear us and start barking until they discovered it was us.
Ask our old mailman about that one, when our dog actually jumped on the hood of the mail truck with vicious barking, “to get the postman”. Not our finest moment in dog obedience.
Back then, the stores we frequented did not sell a wide assortment of dog toys. I remember seeing lots of raw hide bones in large, medium, or small sizes and perhaps a squeaking toy of some kind. Around the holidays, there was always a red mesh bag shaped like a stocking filled with some items and treats for the dogs. That’s it.
Raw Hide Bones?
Raw hide bones are not as available as they once were. According to my research, there are some concerns about how safe they are. Raw hide bones could pose a choking hazard, create digestive blockages and possibly have bacterial contamination.
These bones are not made of beef but of a hide. To make the bones, the hide is washed with bleach, perhaps dyed with pieces being glued together.
Favorite Games & Cute Dog Toys
Back then, our favorite game to play with our dogs was to fetch the stick. We would toss a stick and, of course, the dog would run and pick it up. He would return with the stick in his mouth but that’s when the game began. Of course, our dog wasn’t about to easily give up the stick. He would turn his head, so you couldn’t get the stick. Once you had one end of the stick in your hand, then there was a tug-of-war going on. If you got the stick out of his mouth, you could toss it once again. However, sometimes we just gave up on that game.
We, also, played a variation of the stick game using a towel. Again, the object of the game was to get the towel out of the dog’s mouth. This was something he really held onto. It was almost impossible to get the towel from the dog, but we kept on trying.

Ending Notes
It’s been years since I had a dog, but I fondly remember our fun games of fetching the stick and tug of war towel. Now, thinking about it, my dog would receive some type additional training.
A Big Thank you to Merrifield Garden Center for allowing me to photograph the dog toys in their store and to blog about them.
