Wow, yesterday I received The Big Surprise package on my doorstep. I usually don’t order much through the mail, so this indeed was a big surprise. What could it be?
After opening the box, I noted two decorative tins which I immediately thought were fruit cakes since I’ve talked about them all season long.
However, the Big Surprise tins contain a variety of jelly, spreads, etc. Let’s see we have the usual strawberry and blueberry jam, but there are also jars of mango-peach-lime spread, pineapple-passion fruit spread, honey, etc. So, tomorrow I have lots of flavors I can use on my toast. Isn’t a great part of life having so many options to select from? I also like to use a spoonful of jam or jelly on my cottage cheese.

Anyway, that gift made me think of other nice surprises I had in my life. So, let’s see, I think the biggest surprise was my wedding shower at work.
My Big Surprise
I guess what made this the Big Surprise is I actually had no idea this was happening. All the staff knew about it, but it was a complete surprise to me. No one said a word.
It started out as a normal staff meeting at the other hospital. I remember having my coat and boots on to venture outside on this cold day. I was waiting for my co-worker and friend, to finish up what she was doing. She took a long time, and I began to think we were going to be late. I, always, hated to be late to anything. Little did I know that she was told the food had not arrived and she was to keep me there for a little longer.
When we finally arrived, I looked in the door and was completely surprised. My co-workers had got together to order a staff lunch and had a variety of very nice gifts for me.
I, believe, the doctors I worked for paid for the whole catering order. Everyone obviously looked at the gift register because I received many of the dishes I registered for. I have used this set of dishes throughout my marriage. It was such an exciting moment opening those gifts. I was having a very small and intimate wedding, so the staffs were not invited. I always felt a little bad about that, but I didn’t want anything large being an older bride. Sadly, in the near future, I was going to leave my job and town to start my new life.
So, once again after all these years, thank you everyone for that big surprise and for all the nice wedding shower gifts.
