ReStore Unique Finds describes my shopping experience this week at the Reston/Herndon ReStore shop.
Antique 1870’s Flip Back Reversible Railroad Station Bench
Sure enough, the first item I saw is dark brown wooden antique c. 1870’s flip back reversible railroad station bench. The back of this bench flips over so it can be sat on from either side–most versatile in usage. I watched a YouTube video of a couple flipping the back rest from one side to the other. The whole back piece goes over the handle with the aide of cast iron brackets.
This is an interesting piece because railroads helped move America. Before that time, people walked or rode horses. In the 1870’s, the southern railroads were still recovering from the Civil War damage. There was, also, about 19,000 miles of railroad track. They completed the eastern trunk lines and there was the push for more westward expansion. During the 1870’s, many of the freight cars we see on the tracks today were in existence such as the boxcars, flatcars, hoppers, tank cars, and the red caboose.
This bench has a long history to tell and I have to wonder what train station is was in. Right now, it is for sale in the Reston/Herndon ReStore shop for $300.
Wooden School Desk
A wooden school desk, such as the one below, is always a favorite piece. I love checking out the scribblings on the desk’s top. It also give the desk a lot of character. This desk has a groove at the top to hold the pencils.
I believe this school desk comes with the child-size chair.
Root Crop Storage Bin
This root crop storage bin holds a sack of potatoes, yams, or onions. The front has decorative metal panel of a basket of apples and grapes The door opens forward and then down. There are no shelves in this storage bin.
This wooden storage bin will hold a good size bag of potatoes.
Lamp with Rose Decoration
This floral lamp has a pinkish rose design on it. The lamp has a gold ring around near the top. The lamps are sold without shades.
The pink roses and green leaves on this lamp base stand out.
It would look nice in a bedroom with vintage furniture.
Decorative Shades – ReStore Unique Finds
I’m not totally sure what the last item is used for so I’m calling it a decorative shade. It is done in warm colors of yellow, brown, and rust tones.
To me, it looks like some type of shade or a decorative item to hang.
There are several in the ReStore shop, so be sure to check them out on your next visit.
