This week there was a string of nice days in my area with temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s so it was time to do some pre-spring gardening chores.
After a long, cold winter the garden definitely needs attention. I strolled through the garden and noted all the things needing replacement, attention, cleanup or timming.
Add Soil Compost
One of the pre-spring gardening chores done this weekend, was to enrich the garden soil with compost material. By doing this, it encourage vegetable growth. There are a variety of composts available on the market for this use.
It is also a good time of year to start seeds indoors for those summer vegetables.
Our vegetable garden bed was full of weeds. The soil in this area was originally red clay. The compost is mixed with the red clay soil.
Trim the Boxwood Shrubs in the Pre-Spring Gardening Chore List
It is also the time of the year to slightly trim back the winter gem boxwoods from the patio.
They tend to get a little large and grow onto the patio, but they are the perfect size to hide our air handler outside.
This Winter Gem Boxwood has a nice round shape.
Garden Clean Up of Twigs and Leaves
The below photographs shows a few purple and white variegated crocuses coming up around the lawn and near a few trees. These were planted by one of the previous homeowners.
There was quite a bit of cleaning up of winter leaves and debris which had littered the flower beds.
We cleaned the garden beds of twigs, fallen leaves, and other garden waste.
Final Notes on Pre-Spring Gardening Blog
The long winter is almost over. The below mini daffodil is always an early bloomer.
Enjoy your garden.
This bright yellow flower is always one of the first to bloom in my yard.
