This is the time of year when things are growing and blooming, that I think about my unused patch of dirt. It’s an odd triangular-shaped patch of dirt that the watering hose doesn’t quite reach. I guess, technically, I could add another hose section to my current hose, but that’s another blog.
So it’s a hot, dry patch of dirt and filled with red clay soil but I want to enhance the area with some plantings. I’m thinking, what can I get to grow in this location. Also, I have to accept the fact that some dogs will use this area for a restroom. Lastly, there is a draining pipe running down one side. This comes right up the drainage hole in the sidewalk.
I, also, haven’t measured the size of this plot yet.
Planning – The First Step
I’ve been thinking about this patch of dirt for a long time. Finally, after some discussion, I took a trip to one of my favorite garden centers to check out what plants might be appropriate for that patch of land.
Below is a listing of plants which caught my eye for this patch of dirt and that were, also, recommended by the garden staff.
Yucca Plants
So, my next door neighbor has a grouping of sturdy yucca plants near their garden gate. During the summer months, their plants comes into full bloom with large creamy white flowers.
In particular, I love this yellow and green stripped Colour Guard Yucca. What a lovely plant.
This Yucca plant is a Corbett’s Blue flowing with creamy white blooming flowers. This Yucca grows about 2 ft. high and 2 ft. wide. It would fit nicely in my patch of dirt. Plus, it doesn’t need much watering.
Holly Plants
After checking out some of the holly bushes, this yellow holly plant caught my eye. The Drops of Gold Holly bushes grows about 4 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide. That means I’ll definitely be trimming the bush. I love the look but I think it might be too large for the location. Oh boy, I really don’t want to get into trimming more plants, so I’m thinking this isn’t the plant for me.
Nandina Blush Pink
Nandina plants are often used by landscapers.
In particular, I like this Nandina Blush Pink because some the leaves are slightly pinkish. It only get to be 2 ft. high and 2 ft. wide. The plant is a semi evergreen and grows best in well drained soil.
I think a few of these could fit well in my patch of dirt location.
Ending Notes
Because I am still in the planning stages, I did not buy any plants on today’s trip. However, I definitely have some ideas of what I want to use.
But it, also, occurred to me that I would want the whole front landscape to flow together. So, I am going to have to consider what I buy.
What ever I do, I want to have some plants in my front flower bed matching my patch of dirt.
Next, I need to actually measure this area. So, back to the planning stages.
Happy Planning and Planting!
A big thank you to Merrifield Garden Center for allowing me to take photographs in their store and to blog about them. All plants photographed on today’s blog are available for purchase at Merrifield Garden Center.
