We were out for a drive and I noticed this “Old Baptismal Area” marker on the side of a busy roadway.
It was marked with a City of Fairfax Historic Marker apparently commemorating the place where, in the 1930’s, Mount Calvary Baptist Church, the first African-American church in the city, regularly conducted baptismal services.
On some of my photographs you can see a small creek running through the area.
Old Baptismal Area Historic Marker Bridges Near Old Baptismal AreaThe Mount Calvary Baptist Church is still on Chain Bridge Road.
It was founded by freed slaves back in 1870 after the Civil War.
The church seems to have quite a few programs going on such as Dance Ministry, Bible Study, Dulles Rehabilitation, Christian Education Ministry, Calvary Kids Dance, Senior Choir, Youth Ministry, Counseling, to name a few.
As per the information on Mount Calvary Baptist’s Church’s web site, the Dance Ministry is to glorify God and encourage the saints through the ministry of dance.
With COVID-19, however, I am not sure what is still on the church’s schedule.
This baptismal site has quite a bit of history to it.
I am only sorry there was no parking available so that I could have stopped to see the area and reflect a bit on site.
