Normally, I don’t try free samples in grocery stores, but somehow I couldn’t pass up this Maka Wheatgrass Drink display.
Free Maka Wheatgrass Drink Samples
Today as I was shopping in Sprouts, I noted near the deli section, a free drink display spread out over a couple of tables.
The table also held a small container of faux wheatgrass and colorful cans of the product. Apparently, live wheatgrass is expensive and does not last long in indoor displays.
The drink samples are non-alcoholic beverages all made with wheatgrass which is considered by some to be a superfood. Their research indicates, that wheatgrass drinks also have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties for a healthier lifestyle.
The sample wheatgrass drink flavor choices are Hibiscus Passionfruit, Mango, Lemon, and Coconut Pineapple.
A friendly gentleman working the display tables told me this is a new product line for Sprouts and originally the drink was concocted in the founder’s kitchen. He suggested trying Hibiscus Passionfruit because it is slightly sweeter than the other drinks.
Nutrition Facts for Maka Wheatgrass
One 12 ounce can of Hibiscus Passionfruit contains 60 calories, 14 g. of total carbohydrates, and total sugars 11 g. with 0 g. of protein.
There is also 90 g. of natural caffeine content of Yerba Mate and Guayusa per can. I’m not sure what the difference is between natural caffeine and regular caffeine.
One can is, also, equal to drinking 8 one-ounce wheatgrass juice shots.
Sample Taste Test
I decided to try the hibiscus passion fruit flavor because I previously had iced hibiscus tea and enjoyed it.
If I had to describe the drink, it is slightly carbonated and tastes of a green spring morning mixed with a bit of hibiscus tea. It is not overly sweet and is refreshing.
Ending Notes
Unfortunately, I don’t know how to the make the long A symbol over the two A’s in this product’s name.
After sampling the product, I placed a $3.50 can in my grocery cart, so my family could give me their opinion of the new drink. The drink is also sold by the case and is made in nearby Arlington, VA. I wonder if they give factory tours? On their website they, also, do a pod cast.
I like the fact, that the wheatgrass drink has an anti-inflammatory property and wondering if it might be good for arthritic joints.
Mata’s website indicates that making wheatgrass drinks at home is messy and costly to do and the Mata cans are a convenient alternative.
Wheatgrass is a popular healthy lifestyle choice so I’m glad I was able to enjoy a free sample on my shopping trip.
Thank you to the nice guy in the Herndon Sprouts Store for giving me a free sample of Mata Wheatgrass drink.
