Magnificent Mums –A Great Fall Flower

During the crisp fall season there is no greater flower than the chrysanthemum commonly shortened to “mums”.

They can be purchased inexpensively in many stores where they look like beacons of happiness.

Mums are native to East Asia and northeastern Europe.  They have been cultivated in China from as early as the 15 century.

There are two types of chrysanthemums–florist mums and hardy or garden mums.

Hardy mums come in a variety of colors such as light and dark purple, white, yellow and brown.

I took a trip to the garden center today to purchase a couple of fall mums.

I took this photograph of multiple mums planted in one crock for an unusual yellow and pink plant.

Mums can be planted in the garden, in crocks, or used as border plants.

Make sure your plant gets full sun and adequate water.

What is great about chrysanthemum blooms is that they last for weeks not days.

When selecting a plant to purchase, try to find one with blooms and a lot of buds on it.

Today I planted my mums in my “fake terracotta” patio crocks.  I also gave them a good drink of water.

With a little care my mum plants should last the entire fall season.

The only thing with mums is when you have a few, you want a few more.
