Let’s Go Shopping – Typical Junk Store Trip and Tips
Farmhouse Magic Blog has shown quite a few photographs of the odd and the old, so I thought I would dedicate this blog to what to look for at your local junk store.
What is a deal and what is not?
Generally speaking, anything under five dollars is usually fine to buy.
This is a photograph an a primitive looking red clay candle holder. I like this one and it was very inexpensive, under five dollars. I would buy this piece of art and put a better looking candle in it.
Hand Carved Asian ElephantThis photograph shows a hand carved Asian elephant for $30.
At a $30 price tag I would have to think about this a bit. It is nicely carved and it was very large.
However, the elephant is missing a tusk.
I probably wouldn’t buy this piece since the missing tusk is so elephant related.
Vintage Italian Pewter Tray with two Hallmarks Back View of Vintage Pewter Tray with Two HallmarksThe above photographs show a vintage Italian Pewter Tray marked on the back with two hallmarks. It was priced at $20. It does show some signs of use and some small scratches.
Farmhouse Magic Blog likes this piece. I think it is reasonably priced, has a nice patina and the tray would be useful.
I know it is old by the two hallmarks on the back plus it was very sturdy and has some weight to it.
Small Wooden Rocking ChairThis small wooden rocking chair is very unusual looking. I liked this piece since it is not overly large and would fit in nicely in a small area.
Not sure, but it looks like you might be able to fold it down for easy storage if needed.
Sport Related Shoe Wine HolderThis photograph show a high heel shoe wine holder.
I’m not sure about this one. It is unusual but don’t think it would be that useful. Once you put the wine bottle in it, it would cover the name of the team.
It was only $12 so it was reasonably priced but it looks like it would be easy to accidentally tip over.
German Rhein Castles Cider Punch Lidded Bowl Tureen and MugsThe photograph above shows a magnificent German Rhine castles cider punch lidded bowl tureen with large matching mugs. This set was made in the 1950 to 1960’s. It has raised relief with creamy colored pottery with very detailed German Rhine castles. Some of the castles are Burg Karz, Ruine Mause, Burg Sonneck, etc.
I saw this same piece online for $450. but the online piece had fewer mugs. Not sure what the junk store price was for this set. It also would take up a great deal of storage space.
I could see these items in a museum type setting for display. It is also great if you like old German castles.
This would be a great display piece but would you ever use it to make hot apple cider? Not very likely in my house. This is just too expensive for everyday use.
Clear Glass Decorative ItemsHere is an assortment of clear glass decorative items.
Most items are inexpensive and could be used in various places in your home.
I see a lot of one dollar price tags. Always OK to buy.
I hope you found my junk store shopping tips useful.
Junk stores are great places to find items for your collections.
Happy Junk Store Shopping!
Japanese Painting of a Bird on a Branch Painted on SilkWhat did I buy?
I purchased this small Japanese painting of a bird on a branch which was painted on silk. It was only $10 and is in a nice frame.
It’s a lovely nature scene which I am going to hang in the spare bedroom. I have mass produced paintings in that room.
It’s time to switch out and upgrade a little.
