As I strolled downtown Herndon, across the street I noticed the Herndon Town Hall Building.
This building is located at the corner of Eldon and Station Streets and was built back in 1939 as part of the Public Works project.
This Historic Herndon Town Hall Marker includes a sketch of the building.
Originally this building was the site of the town’s Post Office. The Herndon Post Office, located on the first floor, was in operation during the years of 1930 to 1962. It’s hard to believe in busy Herndon today that this small building could have held all the postal operations.
The mayor and town treasurer had their offices on the second floor. There was also a clinic room for traveling doctors. The three-cell jail was located in the basement.
The photograph below shows a memorial stone outside the Herndon Town Hall which honors those who died during World War II.
A WWII Memorial Stone is nestled in the Flower Bed.
Today this building houses the Herndon Community Television (HCTV) studio. The old jail cells are still present but are only used for storage.
In the 1970’s the red brick sidewalks were added.
The Herndon Town Hall building is surrounded by a grassy green lawn. Sometimes people will stop their bikes and rest for a bit on the benches. There is also a couple of places where you can get a cup of coffee and enjoy the day.
