Herndon Fortnightly Club

This building at 660 Spring Street was the site of the Herndon Fortnightly Club founded in 1889 by eleven forward-thinking women.

This Herndon women’s study group had many interests such as art, literature, science and other popular topics.  They decided to meet once every two weeks, thus, the name of the Fortnightly Club.

Then the Club decided to start lending their books to others.  They collected a total of 1,000 books by 1900.

Unfortunately, a large fire in 1917 destroyed most of their books.

In 1927, the Club built this building and started to collect more books.

This building eventually became the Herndon Fortnightly Library and was the first library to serve Fairfax County.

The photograph of this Herndon Historical marker is located in front of the building.

This building is now the site of the Herndon Friends Meeting which is a religious society of friends, (Quakers).

This brick building was constructed in the Greek Revival style with four large columns out front.

In 1971 with the building of Dulles International Airport and Reston, this library was determined to be too small for the growing local population.

A new modern library was built in Herndon and the the name of the Herndon Fortnightly name carried on to honor those original library founders.

Sorry I do not have a photograph of the newest public Herndon Fortnightly Library but that’s probably a whole new blog.

Thanks for reading our blog. I read the last posting of your blog from 2015 on swimsuits. Your question on smock dresses is interesting. Perhaps one of my Readers can give us some ideas on where to buy smock dresses. Target? Take care and Happy Holidays.
