Hand Dipped Candles/Bayberry

Bayberry Candles, Vintage Allerton Plate & Junk Store Shopping Spree

On today’s blog, the first item from the junk store shopping trip I want to talk about is a set of hand dipped Bayberry candles in a nice gift box. Bayberries candles have a distinct fresh aroma when burned. Their use goes back to Colonial times when the candles were made from the wax coating of berries from the bayberry shrub.

If a bayberry candle is burned all the way down on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, the tradition goes, that happiness, peace, and prosperity will follow the family. These hand dipped candles are slightly bent out of shape but that is fine for my use. Online these same candles sell for approximately $18. My junk store price for the candles was $1.50.

Vintage Allerton English Chinese Plate

The next item I purchased was a North Staffordshire Charles Allerton & Son vintage plate, c. 1915+. This plate has a light green and white design and was made in England. It has an Asian scene with a pagoda. Allerton calls this pattern “Chinese”. On the four edges of the plate there is a repeating smaller pagoda pattern. A pagoda is a tiered tower with many eaves.

Antique Plate

There is a large pagoda in the center of this Allerton plate.

When flipped over, the plate has a clear “Allerton England Chinese” pottery mark near the edge. I paid $5 for for this plate. That is a lot of money for Farmhouse Magic Blog to pay for an item but I liked the look of the Chinese pattern. This plate also some issues on the front with spotted glazing. When I got home, I saw the plate priced online at over $20. I think this plate might look good on my fireplace mantel in a plate holder.

This Charles Allerton & Sons pottery mark has a crown on top of the Allerton banner. The pattern is called Chinese.

Faux Greenery Bunches

I also purchased two faux greenery bunches. I was trying to figure out what type of plant they represented. The faux greenery almost looked like some type of herb such as thyme or marjoram. I paid only .50 cents for each bunch. I think this greenery might work out for a prison museum display I am working on.

Faux greenery makes an area look refreshed.

Large Gold Toned Table Cloth

I saw this large gold toned table cloth on the half off sale rack. It looked in pretty good shape so that tablecloth was purchased for the half off price of $2.50. I washed and aired it outside.

Used Table Cloth

This 50% off table cloth is a nice golden color and will work well for fall related table settings.

I enjoyed my charity junk store shopping trip this week and I found many items that I could use which were very reasonably price. Best of all, the money made from the sale of those items goes back into helping the less fortunate in our area. Happy Junk Store Shopping!
