Focus Pull Video Session with New Macro Lens

Today Farmhouse Magic Blog was assisting our video technical director with the testing out of a new camera macro lens in a focus pull video session.

What Does Focus Pull Mean?

Focus pull is a creative video filming technique where the focus is shifted from one point of interest to another.

For example, if you are outdoors filming a person walking in the woods, you might focus on a pine tree branch and the rest of the background would be blurry.  When you switch and focus to the person in the woods, they would come into sharp focus and the woods would be blurry.

Directors love to use focus pull filming for dramatic scenes with dialogue to zoom in on everyone’s emotions.  It directs the viewer’s attention back and forth to the main focus second by second.

FMB’s Video Focus Pull Findings

We took the camera and tripod outside to film since the light was better.

The video camera was positioned level on a tripod with the new 85 mm, full-frame, macro lens.

The large focus pull side dial was used to set things up.  Our video director manually put the camera in focus for the camera shoot.

We found that the focus pull video sample looked best while being filmed on a tripod.  The focus area was crisp and cleanly filmed.

This new macro lens will be great for filming dramatic focus pull scenes but our technical director is still working on things.

  1. Casey,
Thanks for your question. You mentioned that your weblog looks weird when viewed through an iphone. There are so many variables with this issue. I hope you can get some suggestions from others. Take care of yourself. Of course, also Cheers!
