How to Make Faux Gravy

The faux gravy in the gravy server looks real, however, it is just an illusion.  I got the idea after touring a historic home and seeing that they did the same thing with a vintage punch bowl.  However, they had a clear plastic top specially made for their punch bowl. The difficult part is to find an old gravy boat that has the look you want.  It doesn’t need to be vintage to be used in the dining room meal but it should look era appropriate and have a tapered opening.  This gravy boat was purchased in a second hand store.

Directions for Making a Faux Gravy

Once you find your gravy server, find a piece of cardboard slightly bigger than the opening of your gravy server.  Trace the top opening of the gravy server onto the cardboard.  Then very carefully with sharp scissors cut out the tracing. Continue to cut it down until it fits the opening.  The cardboard should just skim the top of the server and, if cut precisely, will not fall to the bottom of the gravy server.

I then sprayed the cardboard oval with a shiny clear gloss paint and then allowed it to thoroughly dry. When ready to set up your meal exhibit, place the oval on top of the gravy server and it looks just like a server full of gravy.
