Chinese New Year – 2020, Fair Oaks Mall
The Chinese New Year was celebrated today on Saturday, January 25th, 2020. It is also the Year of the Rat.
We were at the mall and noticed all the festivities. There were many demonstrations and dancers in native costumes.

This is a photograph of the Mall’s main stage area. To me, the Chinese New Year decorations look like Nian, the Asian monster. Nian reminds me a little of a tiger.
Apparently loud noises and the color red scare Nian away, so there will be good luck for the new year.
Loud firecrackers are used for this purpose.

These ladies dressed in beautiful native costumes were part of a dance group which performed at the mall.

This lady is wearing a native Philippine costume and headdress for New Years.
She was a lovely lady and even asked me if I wanted to try on her headdress.
The elaborate headdress consisted of many feathers, beads and faux leopard skin accents.
Her vest was also ornately decorated.

This gentleman is giving a demonstration of Filipino Stick Fighting or Serrada Escrima.
A hard bamboo stick is used in hand to hand combat drills.
This photograph shows the man’s hands are moving so fast, you can hardly see the bamboo stick.

This a photograph of the colorful sticks used in a traditional Philippine folk dance called Tinikling.
The two sticks are knocked together while the dancers step between the two bamboo poles.
The man is also dressed in a costume with a hat.

This photograph shows two women wearing Philippine costumes.
Again, we see the elaborate feather headdresses.
I enjoyed celebrating the Chinese New Year by watching all the special activities.
