Using Ultraviolet Light to Disinfect and Sterilize

Today we are talking about the use of ultraviolet light to disinfect and sterilize items which might have been in contact with the coronavirus.

Ultraviolet light technology is an old technique for killing viruses and drug-resistant super bugs.

In particular, UV technology has been used in hospitals and operating suites for years.

I admit I am not an expert on this topic, but I decided to try a few ultraviolet products in my home to destroy coronavirus and other germs.

The first product I am trying out is a UV sterilizing box which was priced at approximately $50.

This box is large enough to place your cell phone, keys, or credit cards into the sterilization chamber.

The inside of the box has a plastic tray to place your item on top of.  There is a mirror below the tray so I guess it reflects the UV light on the bottom of your object.

Place the lid on the box and then push the start button.  In about three minutes, your item will be sterilized and the machine beeps to take the item out.

The second item I recently purchased was an UV electron air purification system which was installed on my furnace.

I’ve used this UV system in both my rentals due to mold and dust issues.  This item is priced at well over $1,000 and the light lasts about two to three years.

The consumer does not need to monitor it but a blue light indicates the unit is working correctly.

In closing, with regards the the coronavirsus, there is a bit of “buyer beware” with these UV sterilizing/sanitizing products.

The small sanitizing device seems like a good idea.

However, it has not been regulated and there is room for error here.

The UV light for the furnace air ducts has had more research done.

This system is installed in an air duct so UV burns to the eyes and skin are not a present danger.

Both UV light products claims to kill viruses but neither has been “proven” to kill the coronavirsus.
