Strawberry season is here at last! There is nothing sweeter or better
tasting than a fresh strawberry from your own garden. Last year, I
didn’t get any strawberries from my strawberry patch because the
squirrels and birds quickly ate every one. This year, my husband built a
homemade strawberry cage to keep the animals out and the strawberries
in. The cages are made out of small wire and scrap lumber. The tops
are tied on with plastic zip ties so it is easy to get the top off for
harvesting berries.
The strawberries I planted had a
maturity date of June but with our warmer days, most of them have
already ripened. I have already eaten several bowls of sweet, fully
ripened strawberries delicious with a little whipped cream so I guess
the strawberry cage is working. My fully ripened strawberries are fully
red under the green caps. I also tossed pellet fertilizer freely over
the strawberry patch. This produced lots of strawberry flowers. This
still leaves lots of insects for the birds to eat, sorry birds no
strawberries.
