Spooky and Thrifty is today’s blog topic. This week, I took a trip to one of my favorite secondhand stores to see what spooky items they had for sale. Sure enough, the whole display window was full of fall fun decorations and other items.
Let’s see, I ended up spending $20 for a variety of fall items such as stickers, fake spiders, glitter pumpkins, make-it projects, and the huge black jack o’lantern which was priced at $9. Wow, I usually never spend that kind of money on my trips to the secondhand store. However, I really loved the large pumpkin and knew it is a great piece of fall decor that I can keep for many years.
I also checked online and found this same pumpkin being sold by individuals for $30 to $40.

The secondhand orange glitter pumpkins had a few marks on them but I turned the marked up areas to the back sides, so one sees it.
I’m doing a quick how to blog on making a decorative outdoor fall item for my front step.

Making a Spooky and Thrifty Front Door Decoration
The black plastic pumpkin was already clean, so I placed it on my front door step. I added two extra orange pumpkins I had in the basement storage to balance things out. My plan is to add a live chrysanthemum to the large opening in the black pumpkin. I guess, of course, I could also add smaller flowers or cold hardy plants to the two smaller orange pumpkins.
All the plastic pumpkins were too light in weight; they could be blown away. So to weigh them down, I added a rock or two to the bottom of each pumpkin.
To the flat stone in the pumpkin, I added two terracotta crocks to give it a little more weight. However, the upside down crocks, also, holds the live chrysanthemum out any water that would gather in the bottom.

Finishing the Spooky and Thrifty Decoration
Lastly, I purchased an inexpensive maroon and yellow centered chrysanthemum. I placed it carefully on the bottom of the turned over crocks. I didn’t have to buy any terracotta crocks since I had a couple on my planting table.

I think the junk store pumpkin project turned out Boo-tiful. So, now we are ready for things that go bump in the night.
For indoor use, it was suggested to use fake chrysanthemums or other fall flowers in the large black pumpkin.
