Working Women’s Lunches

I decided to do today’s blog on Working Women’s Lunches. Lunch for a working woman has to be quick because there is only so much lunch time. Dining out is also expensive and often a rare treat.

What’s for Lunch?

Let’s see, what did I eat for lunch when I was working. First, of all I worked in a hospital in Pennsylvania, so I often went up to the cafeteria for my lunch. The doctors had their own lunchroom located off the cafeteria. The doctors and the hospital staff did not mingle together for lunch.

The salad bar was a good choice as you could take whatever you wanted off of it and take the dish with you if needed. It was full of salad, macaroni and side dishes. On Friday it was fish day and they offered a large piece of fried fish. That was delicious along with a side serving of macaroni and cheese, plus tartar sauce.

Once in a blue moon, members of our staff would go out for lunch but that wasn’t very often. There were a few nearby places for lunch. Plus, the hospital had a “little shop” lunch counter on the first floor. However, usually there was always one person in the department to answer the telephone. I liked it when the Little Shop served half a cantaloupe filled with cottage cheese.

If I was at hospital number two, then I loved their turkey divan lunch and also the pineapple and coconut flaked ambrosia.

The turkey divan meal was a slice or two of turkey, cooked broccoli, with a yellow cheese sauce poured over the meal.

What’s for Lunch in New Orleans

I also heard from a woman from New Orleans. While on the job she didn’t have time to wait in long lines to eat at swanky lunch locations. Her favorite lunch meal was a poor boy sandwich dressed with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayonnaise and either meats, cheeses, or seafood. This was served on fresh French bread. Also, she enjoyed roast beef sandwiches with hot brown gravy.

This person told me that she believes that working women everywhere can relate to this topic. That is, quick lunches in nearby restaurants that don’t break the bank.

Chicken A La King Lunch & Working Women’s Lunches

Lastly, I heard from Trail Diva who enjoyed tv-type meals warmed up in a microwave or chicken a la king for lunch. Note, I’ve never ate chicken a la king, so I looked up the ingredients.

My online research shows that chicken a la king is classic American food dish. It has diced chicken in a rich, creamy white sauce often with mushrooms, red pimentos, peas and onions. It is served on rice, bread, egg noodles or with puffed pastry.

Ending Notes of Working Women’s Lunches

Working women have a job to do, limited time for lunch, and really need an economical solution to that noon day meal. Humm . . . I guess this topic, also, applies to working men.

So, to all working women and men out there enjoy your Friday lunch!

A big thank you to J. and Trail Divia for providing their lunch information and for the inspiration for today’s blog.
