Love Lies Bleeding

Today we are blogging about the Love Lies Bleeding plant or the Amaranthus caudatus. Interestingly enough, this particular plant was gifted to me by another volunteer on the farm. I’ve seen Love Lies Bleeding in other yards and always thought the long hanging red blooms were interesting to look at. However, the blooms on my plant appear to be pinkish in color rather than red.

According to my research, the plant has a great symbolism of love and passion. It is used in floral arrangements and crafts. Apparently, some brides like to use the plant’s flowers in wedding bouquets but, personally, I’ve never seen this done.

It is actually a pretty dramatic plant and I’m finding it fairly easy to grow.

Growing Information

This particular plant can be grown from seeds or from cuttings. The plants prefer a well-drained soil. They can grow in full sunlight or part shade. I have actually planted my plant in a large planter on my patio. The plant is native to South America.

Ending Notes on Love Lies Bleeding

I’ve enjoyed seeing this plant on my patio and the squirrels and bunnies seem to leave it alone. Sometimes those squirrels pull my plants out of the planters and toss them on the patio floor. Oh, boy to those squirrels.

The plant’s long flowering tails seems to grow longer and longer by the day. But that’s OK with me. There is lots of room outside.

So, what does the name and symbolism meant to me? I like a plant with a bit of history and mystery to it. I, also, like that fact, that romance is alive around this plant.

And, as the summer slowly winds down, I’ve glad that I tried growing and learning about another plant.

Until the cooler days of autumn, I’m enjoying my Love Lies Bleeding Plant.
