I noticed my neighbor was having several large trees removed from his property, so I went outside to talk with him and to see the neighborhood blooms. I asked what plans he had for his yard. This time of year, everyone is excited with new plantings, pruning and sprucing up the home yards a bit.
Daylilies
My neighbor mentioned that he is thinning out some of his orange-flowered daylilies as they have become too large. Instead, he wants a bit more color and plans to plant something between the daylilies.
The area planted with orange daylilies is closest to his front door. I believe he has nine large daylily plants.
He, also, asked if I wanted any of the daylilies. Yes, of course, I will take them as they always have a plant donation sale going on at the one nearby park. I plan to donate them but they will probably need to be somehow potted. OK, that is probably another blog.
My philosophy, is never throw out a good plant as someone wants it. Also, most plants are expensive to buy anymore.
Lilies in Neighborhood Blooms
As I continued on my walk, the next thing I noted was this large batch of gorgeous maroon-colored lilies.
So, what is the difference between daylilies and lilies? First, notice the leaves and stems. A lily has a single stem with spiral of leaves on the stem. Daylilies are multi-stemmed. They have long flat blades at the soil line. Lastly, the blooms on the lily last for a week. The blooms for the daylilies are multi-layered and last for only one day.
These lilies are a striking rich maroon color.
Drift Red Roses
The next plant I want to blog about is the Drift roses my neighbor has growing in her front yard. My online research shows that Drift roses are a cross between full-sized ground roses and miniature roses. These roses are hardy and winter resistance.
The red Drift Roses are at the top of this photograph.
Ending Notes in Neighborhood Blooms
I enjoyed talking to both my neighbors and seeing the lovely plants in their yards. I, always, seem to learn something new when I talk to my neighbors about their blooms and get gardening tips. Gardening is an ever learning experience.
Now, take a walk in your neighborhood!
