What’s in the Basement?
I recently was in a basement of an old house, not sure the age of the home, but I found quite a few interesting items there. Probably most people avoid the basement. Basements are generally damp, dusty and dirty with cobwebs decorating the edges.
This basement, however, shows a lot of personality and grit. It shows a can-do time in history where people worked hard, raised children, and had real values.
My first photograph is of an old wood burning stove which was probably used for canning vegetables and fruit. The stove is gritty and worn but the character shines through.
The second photograph is of a step stool absolutely covered in paint plus painting supplies in the background. People did their own painting and didn’t hire others for such work.
The third photograph shows an unusual ring pull on a door in the basement. The ring pull is well made and didn’t fall off even after years and years of use. There is also a wooden latch on the door.
My basement? Not so interesting.
