Volunteering – Flowers for the World’s Volunteers
I have volunteered at one organization or another for most of my adult life.
I volunteered 15 years for an organization preventing cancer as part of the professional education committee. Then I had a short volunteer gig at a local hospital but I felt more like an unpaid employee and not a true volunteer so that didn’t last long. I also volunteered weekly at the neighborhood elementary school for years.
At my current volunteer position, I am a docent giving tours of a historic farmhouse which now has a museum rating.
To find out what volunteer opportunities will work out best for you, try out a variety of volunteer experiences. What you are passionate about? Think about how this is going to help others and society in general.
My volunteering jobs were important in landing my last two paying jobs. In fact, in one interview they only asked me about my volunteering activities.
Above all, it gives one a sense of purpose as you go through your life. Make sure your life is a life well lived. Volunteering speaks volumes in caring for others, so flowers for the world’s volunteers.
July 30, 2019 – UPDATE – I’ve been selected for one of the Outstanding Volunteer Awards for the Park Services for 2019. I will get my picture taken today. The ceremony is in November.
July 19, 2021 – UPDATE – I have been asked to be on the Board of a particular organization which directly relates to my other volunteering.
Lots of people interested in volunteering as today this blog moved up to my number one spot.
Will,
Thank you for your comments. However, on reading my volunteering blog a second time, I see nothing amiss with it. I’m sorry if you don’t believe in volunteering but that’s your choice in life. Take care of yourself and have a great day.
