I decided to place this blog under my “Saving Money” category just to show you what treasures you can find after the holidays in secondhand stores. I paid approximately $5 total for my purchases. Keep reading to find out more.
I purchased two boxes of the vintage-looking red apple decorations in the after Christmas sale. They were originally priced at $2.00 a box but were marked down 75% so I only paid one dollar both boxes. The apples look slightly worn and were sold in nice storage boxes. What make me think they are from Germany is that the boxes are marked DM on old price tags which generally mean Deutsche marks.
My items were also placed in a nice red plaid bag.
These vintage apples have gold cords on the stems which can be used to hang them from the Christmas tree branches.
Red Apple Tree Decorations, (German?)The photograph below, shows a clear-mini juicer which was only .50 cents. I liked the fact that it is smaller than a regular juicer. I should be able to find a space for it in my crowded kitchen.
If you look at these old juicers, the design is ingenious because the seeds stay in the first ring of the juicer and the juice flows to the outer section. There is also a spout for easy pouring.
This juicer is well worth the .50 cents I paid for it.
Mini Citrus Glass JuicerThe photograph on the right, shows the glass juicer next to faux fruit.
Glass Mini Juicer with Lemon and LimesI, also, found the below 1847 Rogers Brothers IS spoon in the Remembrance Pattern for $3.00. It is the size of a regular tea spoon and not a larger-sized slotted serving spoon.
No, it was not made in 1847 that is part of the name. It probably was made in the late 1940 to 1950’s and is flatware not silverware.
The reason I bought it was due to the holes in the spoon. What was the purpose? To remove a tea bag? Pick up an olive? So far I have not found anything online about it.
1847 Rogers Brothers IS Remembrance Pattern SpoonUpdate: 10-23-2021 – The 1847 Rogers Brothers IS spoon was actually used to serve bonbons or nuts. Interesting!
Anyone for bonbons?
To Sum Up the $5 Junk Store Shopping Trip
I found this shopping trip be cost effective in a number of ways.
After I spoke with the sales lady in the store, she said I could try out the red apples on my Christmas tree and if I don’t like the look, I could always donate them back.
So next year, I already have a new look for my holiday tree with only spending one dollar.
I also have a “free” gift bag. Since it is plaid, I could use it any time of the year for a present. There is a store name on the bag but I can always use a sticker or glue some ribbon over it.
The juicer will help me in the kitchen since I use quite a bit of lemon juice for baking and cooking.
The lesson here is when saving money, don’t forget to check out those local junk or resell shops.
There is always a bargain waiting for the open minded shopper.
“Frohliche Weihnachter” Table Runner – Bonus Junk Store Find
I decided to add the below photograph of a white table runner embordered with the German wording “Frohliche Weihnachter” running down the center. It translates in English to “Merry Christmas”.
The table runner, also, has a a gold candle design embordered on each pointed bottom end.
Frohliche Weihnachter – German – Merry Christmas Table RunnerThe table runner measures five and a half feet long by four inches wide.
It was marked 75% off or it was only a dollar. I thought I would purchase it to decorate my fireplace mantle for next year.
However, in getting it home, it is way too short for my mantle.
Note: This table runner was not part of the $5 shopping trip.
Grocery Store Sale – Glitter Ribbon
As a wise shopping be sure to check out grocery stores for after the season sales.
Grocery stores often fill shopping carts with left over merchandise they want to sell at low prices.
I found two rolls of green glitter ribbon for only ten cents each. This should be enough to wrap several holiday packages next year.
