Trimming Back Hosta Plants in the Fall

When fall rolls around, a needed task is trimming back yellowing and dead hosta leaves.

Cutting off the old leaves, gives the plant a fresh start come spring.

It also helps to prevent plant disease and insect issues.

Hosta plants keep their leaves in the spring, summer and fall.  When winter and cooler days approach, the leaves turn yellow, wither and die.

When this happens, I get out my blue clippers and cut the plant back to about 3 to 4 inch long stems.

This summer I split my hosta plants so this one doesn’t look too full but come this spring, it should be lush and green once again.

I, also, need to rake up those leaves but I’ll do that another day.

And so the garden rests waiting for spring and warmer days.
