Tomorrow we Celebrate Juneteenth

I noticed today that some of the banks around here are closing early tomorrow, June 19th, to celebrate Juneteenth.

In fact, many companies are giving their employees a paid day off to honor the day.

Juneteenth is celebrated in the United States to commemorate the end of slavery.

June 19th, is tied back to a speech given in 1865 in Texas which told enslaved black people that the Civil War has ended and they were free.

Celebrations are varied and can include family picnics, rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, parties, blues festivals and Miss Juneteenth contests.

It is also called Freedom Day or Jubilee Day.

Juneteenth helps people remember the past.  It also allows one to support the black community and African culture.
