The Red Fox

The Red Fox

This morning, I had a special visitor or the red fox on my front lawn. It was still dark out and about 4 a.m. For some reason, I looked out my front window and saw a red fox poking his nose into my front lawn.

OK, my little piece of urban haven is always “call of the wild”. I never know what wild animals are going to sneak up into my yard. So, I always have to be ready for the unexpected. Occasionally one of the critters will need rescuing.

Let’s see I have the usual rabbits, squirrels and birds. However, I have also had an occasional deer or two, one ill-tempered snapping turtle, regular turtles, mice, lizards, snakes. Humm. . . that doesn’t count the huge black snake that fell from a tree on top of me. Good thing I was wearing my trusty sun hat, or it would have fallen directly on my head.

The Red Fox and My Lawn

This photo is a little dark, but you can see how close the red fox is. He was looking in my lawn for something. I think he probably noticed some grubs or some other insects in my lawn.

By now, I have usually treated and fertilized the lawn but so far, I’m a bit behind on my lawn care.

More Information

Red foxes are found throughout Northern Virginia including forested areas and even suburban neighborhoods.

They are omnivores feeding on a variety of small animals, insects, fruit and even larger prey. They have been known in some cases to catch small cats. It is advisable to feed pets indoors and keep them in the house at night. Foxes also will eat pet food, garbage, or even seeds from bird feeders. Foxes are helpful to control rodent populations by eating mice and rats.

They are active during dawn and dusk but can be seen in the daylight, too.

Our local government web site states they can carry rabies and mange. So never think a wild animal is tame.

Ending Notes on the Red Fox Blog

I’m up early to get this blog out to my Readers. I hope you enjoyed it.

I love all animals both tame and wild.
