Here at Farmhouse Magic Blog, I always start Thanksgiving Prep, the day before.
That way, I have most of the dishes made, so I can sit back and enjoy the day with my family.
I only have to reheat certain food items on the stove top and, of course, make sure to put my turkey in the oven.
I also like to take extra time in planning the table setting.
Carrot and Celery Sticks
One of the first tasks of the day, is to clean, peel and cut up celery and carrot sticks. Tomorrow, I will add these to the relish dish.
Wash the vegetables thoroughly, peel, cut and then placed in a plastic container until it is plated tomorrow.
I always think regular size carrots taste fresher than the mini ones you buy already peeled.
Low Calorie Thanksgiving Snack.
Turkey Stuffing with Minced Onions and Celery
I make this stuffing with the same boxed stuffing mix every year. And, every year my family enjoys it.
I add minced onions and celery to perk up the flavor.
Use an easy to make stuffing recipe.
This one came out of a box.
Cranberry Sauce with Cinnamon and Brown Sugar for Thanksgiving Prep
I decided to make fresh cranberry sauce this year as I’ve not had it in awhile.
The first thing is to wash and remove any soft cranberries from the mixture.
This cranberry sauce is quick and It only takes about 20 minutes to make. The brown sugar and orange give the sauce a bit of depth.
Be sure to taste it, as if it is too tart, you can add another tablespoon of brown sugar.
Ingredients
- Fresh Cranberries, bag 12 ounces, (I used cranberries from Canada).
- Brown Sugar, 1/2 cup plus two tablespoons
- Naval Orange, one medium size, plus 1 tablespoon of zest
- Lemon juice, one tablespoon
- Ground Cinnamon, approximately 1/4 tablespoon
Directions
- In a saucepan over medium heat combine the cranberries, orange juice and zest, brown sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon and bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat and simmer stirring occasionally until the berries burst and the sauce becomes thick about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Remove from heat, cool and refrigerate.
I find it easier to zest the orange first, and then squeeze the juice out.
This is a quick, easy recipe for tasty cranberry sauce.
Homemade Apple Pie
I love homemade apple pie for the Thanksgiving Day dessert. For Thanksgiving prep, I always make my pie and other desserts ahead of time.
Please note that making homemade apple pie is a great way use up those bruised and not perfect looking apples. The apples are peeled and cut up, so it really doesn’t matter if there is a bruise or two.
It economically uses up apples that might get tossed in the trash.
The apples used in my homemade pie are Granny Smith, Crisp Pink, and Honey Crisp.
They are certainly not in perfect condition.
The Potato Masher and the Peanut Butter Cookies in Thanksgiving Prep
I noted a new way to imprint peanut butter cookies by using a potato masher instead of a fork. I wondered how the baked cookies would look, so I made a batch.
The cookies have a bit of texture to them and look chunky.
It is definitely fun to try but be sure to dip the potato masher in granulated sugar so the cookie dough does not stick.
