Tai Chi Student

OK, I’ve recently signed up for my fourth Tai Chi class, so I guess I’m a real Tai Chi student. Over the years I’ve tried a variety of different exercises, but Tai Chi is the one that seems to fit my present lifestyle. Also, the class is very convenient, and it only takes us a few minutes to drive there.

So far, I’ve only had the one instructor, but the classroom has a variety of students at different levels. The teacher stresses to do only what you can do. The important thing is to get up and get moving.

What is Tai Chi?

In a few words, Tai Chis is an ancient martial art initially developed for combat and self-defense. Tai Chi is a gentle form of exercise that offers benefits of improved balance, flexibility and muscle strength. It also promotes breathing techniques, overall improved health and well-being while decreasing stress.

At first, it doesn’t seem that this class came out of combat and self-defense. However, the instructor showed the class how different moves are used to push back if in a fight. If a person means you harm, one spot to hit them under the arms. OK, the best place to stop an attacker, I’m not going to mention.

So far, I’ve enjoyed the weekly class, and I think one of the benefits for me is greater endurance. When I first started the class, I would come home tired. Now I come home refreshed and able to do more. Being a Tai Chi student has also helped me in other ways. It is also sort of a “date night” for me as I get to do this with my partner.

Ending Notes on the Ancient Art

I enjoy being a Tai Chi student and learning more and more about this form of exercise.

A few tips for taking the class are to bring a bottle or container of water since you will get thirsty and wear comfortable clothing. I buy good athletic shoes with arch support built into the shoe, so I now have a spring to my step. Other than that, no exercise equipment is needed.

Interestingly, our instructor has mentioned the use of Chinese fans which are used in some Tai Chi classes. The special fans are made of metal and can be used as a weapon. They are called “Iron Fans” or “Fighting Fans.”

OK, gals, get those fans up.

Note: Sorry I don’t have any fan photographs, but I thought these Chinese lanterns looked interesting.
