Oh boy, we have all seen those student driver stickers on cars. It gives a warning to other drivers that the person is learning. We can also expect other drivers to give them a few breaks on the road and to keep traffic moving. Of course, they might also make a few mistakes, too. Always, use caution when you see this type of sticker.
Learning to Drive and the Student Driver
These stickers brought back old memories of learning to drive. When I took driver’s training, I had already been behind the wheel. I learned to start the car, and some of the important features like brakes. We also drove the car up and down our long driveway.
Learning to Drive Challenges
At that time, driver’s training was a required course offered in high school. The driving instructor, was paid for by the school district. It seems they took you out driving a few times and taught you how to change a tire. The high school also showed a film, I think it was called “Red Asphalt,” about bloody car accidents with drinking. Yep, one guy fainted in the class while viewing it.
To start with, there were two or three other kids in the car with you as everyone waited their turn. We always had an automatic to drive with but one day I had to drive a stick shift. Oh boy, to that one. I wasn’t very good at it. I remember one part of town had a fruit packing plant. Near that plant, was a railroad track. If you could see how I bumped and limped across that rail road track, it was almost comical. I guess I was lucky I didn’t get the car stuck on RR tracks.
Freedom of the Road
Of course, the main thing with a student driver is at some point they will have to take a written test, vision test, and driving test to see if they can get a drivers license.
I very clearly remember my first driving test. I passed the written part with no problem. Then I got behind the wheel and started down a street in Oceanside. The instructor kept on telling me to make a left hand turn, but I passed a couple roads up, before I finally made the turn. I noticed there were a bunch of pigeons in the middle of the road, so I honked at them, thinking I’ll get some extra points for that.
Ending Notes on the Student Driver
Well I guess did OK with things because I passed on the first try. I was totally excited about it. In fact, I’m still excited because I can get behind the wheel and go where I want to.
So what advice do I give the person with the Student Driver Stickers on their car? Well, my first suggestion, would be to place the student driver stickers on the back bumper and not the hood of the car. I really don’t think that anyone can see the stickers in traffic when they are placed on the car’s hood.
Happy Trails and Good Luck.
