ReStore Dough Box

ReStore Dough Box

First, I am going to blog about a ReStore Dough Box. I noted this item near the front part of the store. It is priced at $200. However, in looking at this piece, I think the legs were added at another time to make it more useable much like a small table.

Basically, a wooden pine dough box is a vintage home baking item. Homemakers prepared and proofed bread or pizza dough in it. The porous pine box provides a consistent environment for the dough to rise. It would also absorb excess moisture which leads to a baked better bread texture.

Some bread boxes like this one, came with a removable top. This would allow for extra storage when not in use.

For generations, these dough boxes were a staple in many households. In large families, bread was an important part of the meal.

Today, the purchase of a dough box adds character to your kitchen or home. This wooden bread dough box would also look great in a rustic farmhouse setting.

Blue Director’s Chairs

The next items I’m blogging about are two blue director’s chairs. I like these chairs because when they are not in use, you can fold them up. They would work great in a small area or balcony. Actually, I have a couple of these director’s chairs in my basement. They have a wooden frame, and the back and seat are made of sturdy canvas.

The bright blue of these chairs looks fresh. They are priced at $18 each.

Snack Dishes with Cup Marking

Years ago, when ladies entertained each other in their homes, they would bring out these snack dishes. The round part of the iridescence glass snack dish would hold your coffee or teacup, or perhaps a small glass. Getting creative when entertaining, wouldn’t it be cute to add a flower in a small vase to each dish?

Let’s see, these dishes are priced at $3 each located in the home/dish section of the ReStore shop.

Duck/Geese Oval Dish

OK, I’m not sure if these are ten white ducks or geese on this dish. They have beaks and feet accented in gold with carefully drawn on eyes. On the back, I believe, I read the words Barhart 82. Indeed, if this dish was made in 1982, that would make it 41 years old. Well on its way to becoming an antique.

Getting creative, this piece could be used as a candy dish, home decoration, planter etc. Online I saw a more detailed design which originally came from Holland.

Vintage Wooden Storage Piece

Our next item is a small vintage-looking storage chest with a bright patch work lining. So, the wooden part of the box definitely looks well-worn and loved. The handle is wrapped in off-white cord.

This piece is located near the front of the store near the checkout area.

This wooden chest is, also, lined with this cute blue, yellow and red piece of material.

Ending Notes on ReStore Dough Box

In conclusion, I think on this shopping trip my favorite item is the dough box. I like to think of a housewife making a big batch of bread and how labor intensive things were back then.

If I need bread, off to the store I go, but things were not that simple years ago. Something to think about.

Thanks to the Northern VA Habitat for Humanity ReStore shop in the Reston/Herndon area for allowing me to take photographs and blog about items in their shop.
