Red Wagon Holiday is a good title for today’s blog. Our blog is all about the holiday celebration, having a good meal, and enjoy each other’s company.
Of course, we also don’t want to spend a lot of money or time on today’s celebration. So, let’s see how our thrift store items pulled the look together. Here is how it was done.
Red Wagon Holiday Table Setting
Initially I placed a green tablecloth on the table and ran a red and white table runner down the middle.
So, let us take a look at what was purchased recently secondhand, used previously, or repurposed.
- Repurposed – Now, let’s take a look at our Red Wagon Holiday table setting. Of course, you will notice our little red wagon on the table as the centerpiece. This wagon was purchased many years ago from my neighbor’s yard sale. Her son played with it when he was little. Now he is all grown up, married, and moved away. To make the centerpiece, I filled the red wagon with filler and then proceeded to add red poinsettias and berry picks. I pulled the handle to the upright position.
- Secondhand Purchase – You will notice I’ve used my secondhand red and white dish cloths as large napkins which I folded into thirds and placed on the plates at each setting. Please note, I even used one of the dish towels under the ham.
- Secondhand Purchase – Also, note the small red patterned drink napkins under the water glasses. Two sets of these were also purchased new in a charity secondhand store this year.
- Secondhand Purchases & Making Do – Lastly, notice the tall yellow candles in the glass holders near the little red wagon. Of course, these were purchased secondhand, I believe, the year prior. OK, yellow is probably not the color of holidays, but I think the color works here picking up the center of the poinsettias and the deviled eggs.
- Reusing – I believe, this is the third time I reused the plastic cake decorating items on today’s chocolate roll cake. The set consists of Santa’s sleigh and reindeers, presents, holiday tree, and greenery. Last year I used the same set on a cheesecake, but I cleaned them and stored them away.
- Secondhand Purchase & Repurpose – Vintage hand cut drink glasses to hold the fruit salad.
- Secondhand Clear Glass Cookie Stand – Purchased previously in a secondhand store.
Little Red Wagon Menu
I wanted a super easy menu for today’s holiday meal. I purchased a store brand spiral ham. This ham is almost 11-pounds, but we like to eat left over ham in sandwiches, so I bought a good sized one. Also, if I purchased $40 in groceries, then I got my ham on sale for 99 cents a pound. That’s a good deal when considering the price of groceries.
- Spiral Ham
- Small Yellow Dutch Potatoes – roasted in oven.
- Fresh Brussel Sprouts – roasted in oven with potatoes. To make clean up easier, I roasted both items on the same tray. Note: no pots to wash.
- Fresh fruit cup consisting of Yellow Berries, Green Grapes, and Pomegranate arils. Since the Yellow Berries are tart, I added a spoon of fresh whipped cream to the topping.
- Deviled Eggs
- Cookies – Fast Peanut Butter Cookies, Chocolate Dipped Oreos, and Candy Canes. We, also, used some store purchased chocolate dipped star shaped cookies.
- Chocolate Roll Dessert – (Dashing Through the Snow), This was made with a boxed cake, dusted with powdered sugar and decorated with a plastic holiday set. The filling is a butter, cream cheese and whipped cream combination. (Whoops, looks like my reindeer has fallen down near the Merry Christmas sign.) The dessert was plated on a large holiday plate from 2011 which was a gift back then.
- Coffee, iced tea, and water.
