The new area rug is the title of today’s blog but I am also giving a few rug buying and decorating tips.
This weekend, as I neared the exit door to the Pottery Barn store, I noticed this rolled up rug behind a piece of furniture. I need a new rug, so I pulled it out to get a better look. The appealing soft greens and other natural colors gives the rug a warm look. The price is right for this rug, however, it is a final sale and no returns. So I first went home and measured my space to make sure it would fit.
Hand-Tufted Wool Rug
My new rug is hand-tufted and washed of 100% wool with a plush texture. It depicts a field of flowers in a rich blend with contrasting natural hues.
Getting the Rug Home
Purchasing the rug is easy part. Getting it home, the hard part. The rug is a generous 9 x 12-feet so it is rather large and heavy.
Our first attempt to fold down the back seats of our vehicle and pull the rug forward didn’t work. The rug wasn’t rolled quite evenly so it was hanging out the back. A couple of the nice workers from the store, re-rolled the rug with a paper carpet cylinder in the center and that did the trick. The rug then fit nicely into our vehicle as long as we pulled it forward with one end resting on the dash board. We carefully drove home.
Decorating Tips with a New Area Rug
Originally, I had three different rugs in this area making the living room look disjointed. So, I first removed all three small rugs and vacuumed the area.
With the addition of this larger rug, the room now has a good foundation and the space comes together. Not only does the room look better, but the new rug protects the wood flooring and blocks against any drafts coming from the basement. In this case the bigger rug is better.
When purchasing a new rug, try to allow approximately one foot between the rug and the wall to avoid a wall to wall carpeting look.
There are several ways to set up your room, but I thought the semi floating layout worked best for me. Since my kitchen, dinning room, and living rooms are open spaces, this new rug defines the living room area.
This rug has some lighter green, mauve and gray colors in it, so it gives my room a lighter look. If you select a rug with darker colors, it gives your room a darker look.
Ending Notes on a New Area Rug
The smaller rugs from the living room were used in different areas of my house. In fact, one rug has the backing coming off, so I’m probably going to toss that one out.
But my new large living rug looks great, fits the room nicely and I’m very happy with my purchase.
The right rug pulls the decorative themes of your room together and this was true in my case. Rugs are soft, cozy and comfortable.
A Big Thank You to the the Two Pottery Barn Employees who re-rolled my rug and helped us load up our purchase.
