Johnstown Area Heritage Association: Pop-Up Exhibit Challenge

Hi my name is Pat.  I learned about the JAHA at Home:  Pop-Up Exhibit Challenge and I wanted to write a special blog with a few photographs.  I also thought my readers would enjoy this different post.

At one time I lived and worked in Johnstown.  I am also a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown where I majored in Economics.

Although I have been gone for many years, I still remember the hard-working, good people of Johnstown.

This first photograph is of a Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital employee T-shirt commemorating the hospital’s 100 years in service.

I believe they gave all the employees this free t-shirt.

I hand washed it out for this photo shoot but it still has some paint stains on it.

This photograph is of a Johnstown Pressed Back Chair with a Bleeding-Heart design stamped into the wood.

At one time it belonged to my great uncle who lived in Cambria City.

The chair was either made in lower Conemaugh or by the Defrehn Company in Hornestown.

I keep the chair next my front door to hold my hats.

I absolutely love this photograph of the white wood burning stove in my in-law’s basement in Conemaugh.

I don’t think they ever used this stove.  I believe this extremely heavy stove is still in that basement.

I imagine many years ago, it was used for canning on hot summer days.

The smaller washboard was used by my mother who lived in Cambria City.  She washed clothes on a wringer washer.

She would also make her own laundry soap by using lard and lye cooked up on a stove.  She would then grate the bar of white soap to toss in the washing machine.

I’ve always loved history, antiques, and cooking.   I presently volunteer at a historic farmhouse where I give free tours and talk about old time farm life.

I also make and donate faux food for their museum kitchen exhibit.  This photograph is of a faux chocolate cake roll I recently made out of two oatmeal boxes.

The below cabbage photograph shows a real cabbage leaf next to my recycled paper cabbage head.

I use my imagination to craft the faux food.

So that ends my blog post for the JAHA Pop-Up Exhibit Challenge.

I hope you enjoyed seeing some of my favorite things.
